This fall, September 22nd, I am going to ride in the Headwaters 100 bike ride. 100 miles of riding through scenic northern Minnesota on my early 1980s $20 Schwinn road bike I bought from the Salvage Depot in Park Rapids, MN. I started training in January for this race by going to Scheels and buying a bike trainer that lifts my back tire off the ground and I began pedaling away in my basement.
I started out by riding for 20 minutes at a time and now I am currently riding around 25 miles at a time outdoors. I have been riding about 120 to 150 miles a week now. I have heard that I need to do one 80 or so mile ride prior to doing this event from a fellow that did this ride before so that is my goal for August. June I will try a 40 miler and in July try a 60 miler. The one thing I do know is I need a new seat and a better pair of padded biker shorts. Maybe a new used bike if I really get serious about biking.
Right now currently I have about two other strong committers with myself and about three or four maybes. I am hoping to get a solid crew together so that we all hold each other accountable and then follow through with the ride. I served soup at the ride last year and saw many elderly riders doing the bike ride so I figured that I should try it and make it a goal to ride the full 100 miles this year. I do not think I will ride it every year but will try to make it an annual goal as long as I am healthy and also to stay healthy.
Come join me if you are interested in setting a loft goal. They also have a 75 mile track and 45 mile track for those that are not interested in going the full distance. I have put the link below for more information about the race or just search Headwaters 100 for other sites that have information as well.
