Fall in MN is one of the best times of the year in this great state I call home. Its a time you can be outdoors without having to worry about the buzzards flying around called mosquitoes, woodticks, deerticks, being to hot, being to cold, the Twins are usually done antagonizing you (though the Vikings are just beginning to), and many of the other great things about fall here in MN. Saunas start to feel absolutely perfect because cooling off feels just about perfect. You can stop sweating because its cool enough and you don’t get icicles in your hair, nose hairs, or facial hair like you do in the winter for Minnesotans. Below are a few of the many reasons I really enjoy fall most of all.
Fall Golf-
Fall golfing is usually the best kind of golf. The scenery is unbeatable and the weather is as well. Normally at my home course, the course is in the best shape of the year. The greens are rolling fast because they cut them short for the Club Championship and the greens are firm because they are not watering them as much. There is a lot of leaf trees around the course as well so that adds to the scenery. And it normally is when I am playing the best golf of the year because all the tourneys I play in are done for the year so I am not trying to change anything but just playing to have fun. Not sure why I can’t do that all year.
Colors-
If you have never been to Northern Minnesota, or northern states for that matter, you definitely need to take a trip. To see all the trees in the variety of colors they end up being makes for a great scenic drive. My three favorite places are Duluth, MN, Aura, MI and the Wolf Lake hills. Makes for some great family photos or wedding/engagement photos if you are in to that kind of thing.
Soups-
Soup weather is coming back around. I love to eat all kinds of soup and we usually do that in the fall, winter, and spring months. I love split pea, broccoli cheese, cheesy chicken chowder, beef barley, wild rice, beef stew, and homemade chicken noodle soup to name several. My favorite soup is cheesy ham chowder of which I could eat a pot full of. The only way to eat these soups, well guess my only way, is with a loaf of fresh baked bread. Warm straight out of the oven with butter on it, dipped into soup is something that is unbelievably tough to beat. Now don’t get me wrong, I will eat the soup regardless even if my wife does not make me a loaf of fresh baked bread. Its just much better with.
Books-
Something I have written about prior, but this is one of my favorite things to do in the fall/winter. Summer and spring are always so busy that I don’t have a ton of time to do any reading. Fall seems like it slows down a little and once I get all my firewood cut and split for the year, most of my projects are done so I can relax a little more in the evening and read a book. The current book I am reading is The Black Widow by Daniel Silva. I really enjoy his books and the character that is in this book. I just finished No Man’s Land by David Baldacci who is by far one of my favorite authors. But just about any book will do as reading has always been one of my favorite things to do. I think I have not finished maybe 2 books I started reading in my life. Usually if I start reading them, I have to finish them. Bad as they may be.
Those are a few of the reasons I enjoy fall. I would like to say I enjoy it because the NFL is on but the MN Vikings usually disappoint in the end so I don’t tend to enjoy that as much as other people in different states. I have swam in my pool every month so far this summer since I put it up, though jumping into this month would mean I am jumping into a 45 degree pool. I went in the other night and was able to stand in there for 30 seconds before my legs started to go numb. I was sauna “swimming”. The old Finnish past-time…. Studies show that it is good for you. I don’t know about the frigidly cold pool part but the sauna part for sure.
Till next time… Happy Fall
Winter is coming
