About you page

April 9, 2018 By Andrea Haverinen

Continuing on last weeks theme of building our online footprint for our business, I have been looking at how to refine our website.  We had a family friend build the website for us.  She did a great job setting up the website but just used content from our pamphlets we give the people that walk in the door for each page if it made sense for that page.  So I am going to go through each page and make edits where needed.  Several people said that the “about you” page is one of the most visited pages beyond the homepage on each site.  In our industry, senior assisted living, it makes sense.  I know that people are also going to look at the services offered page and amenities pages, but they initially want to get to know you a little bit so they will check out who you are and what you are about.  I am sure there are a lot of other great videos out there.  I watched quite a few but this one was the one that kind of resonated with me the most. Here are my takeaways from the following video.

Which Voice?

Are you going to talk in the first person or third person.  Being it is my wife and I that own the business, am I going to put “us” and “we” as the voice or am I going to use our business name as the person talking.  I am not 100% sure yet on which way I will go so my wife and I will have to write down two separate bios and see what one we like better.

Authoritative-

Since we are a young couple in a senior industry, we will have to make the page convey the level of care we are able to provide.  We want our potential clients not to be put off by the fact that we are a small community assisted living facility.  Testimonials will help with this.

Character-

The about us page needs to have a unique style of writing.  It should not necessarily be written as a historical timeline of your business.  Many sites are written like this and are easily forgotten.  You want to have a memorable page that will get people talking about you or willing to share your site or online profiles like facebook, twitter, and the like.

First Impression-

This page is kind of like meeting someone for the first time.  If you come off as cold or unwelcoming or boring, they may not even check out the rest of your site to see what you offer.  Especially in our line of work, people want to feel like it is a place they can trust with their or their loved ones lives.  Thus, this page is an important page to give the first impression you feel you can give if they walk in your front door to visit.

These were the main takeaways I got from this video.  If you know of any other great videos for me, let me know.  I am always looking for good ideas to help continue to build my website.
Till next time- spring is coming.  I think.
